ENERGY STAR® is a nationally run program offered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy. It provides carefully developed energy efficiency standards, and encourages energy efficient products and practices. One plan for improved efficiency that is offered by ENERGY STAR® centers on improving the efficiency of commercial buildings and facilities. This improvement plan incorporates a rating system to help you achieve your energy and environmental goals. As a reward for meeting or exceeding national standards, the EPA and Department of Energy awards the ENERGY STAR® to buildings who have satisfactorily improved their usage.
The ENERGY STAR® Label is awarded to buildings that score 75 or above, indicating they are in the top 25 percent of buildings across the nation. With a rating of 75 or above, a building is eligible for the ENERGY STAR® Label. However, before the Label is awarded, a Professional Engineer (PE) must perform a site visit and verify the data and complete the application for the label. Having an ENERGY STAR® rated building ensures improvements in energy consumption, financial performance and environment impact.
